Anyone got a fear of flying?

My fear is that the plane is going to crash. I sometimes force myself into flying when it's expected of me, but I've never flown overseas and don't think I can do it.

Would like to go check out Europe for a while just everytime I think about it I get anxiety about flying for 24 hours.

Found this which I found interesting:

"Approximately one in three people are afraid to fly and one in six won't get on
a plane at all."

I wouldn't wanna fly overseas cuz it takes too fkn long. I've only been on domestic flights to townsville, and if the seating is as bad as in international flights, then f*** that s***. I'll wait till teleporters are real

Some people have a genuine fear of flying which they simply cannot 'deal with'.

I've only been on a plane twice. First time i got stuck beside some fatty that could hardly fit in her seat, I didnt dare getting up to take a piss no way I could squeeze past her. Second time I was surrounded by s***c***s coughing their guts' up I thought there were all gonna die, fkn annoying c$%nts.

just remind yourself of the facts, the amount of flights each year, the amount of crashes, and the amount of fatal crashes. youre more likely to die in any other form of transport.

you have a 100% better chance of dieing in a car accident than in a plane crash.

If you would like to further develop your fear, maybe i can help.. Just completed an advanced aerial acrobatics course, nothing quite like a few barrel rolls and stalls to take the fear right out of you. :)

never been on a plane, but I doubt I'd be scared of it crashing and me dying. If you've seen me drive, you'd know I'm not affraid to die :p

I think "chopper does airline safety" said it best.

"Alrighty, in the unlikely event *cough* bulls*** *cough*, f***in eh, there's emergency exits up this way, over that way and where the f***in' wing's comin' off has ripped a big f***in' hole in the plane eh.....
Now if somethin' goes wrong, Don't just assume the f***in' crash position, right... Assumin the f***in' worst, cause, f***in'... f***in' you can bloody lean forward all you f***in' like, we're still gonna hit the ground at 900 f***in' kay's an hour.. f***in... bang, thanks for choosing chop-airline... enjoy your f***in' flight"

Hey Loki do you have a link for the chopper clip? I have his weather and bingo ones, fkn hilarious.

I think the only way I'll get on an overseas flight is by being accompanied by a woman with large breasts and a box full of valium.

heh, funny how the human minds works.

I'm not having a go at you by the way, gimpy.

But, yea, quite a few people have this fear. Even when presented with the facts - the hard truth - that planes are pretty much the safest form of transport, they can't shake the fear. No problems driving a car every single day, catching busses and trains, but even just the thought of flying is very uncomforting. The mind is aware of the fear, AND is also aware of the fact that aircraft are one of, if not THE, safest modes of transportation. - Yet the most obvious rational conclusion to arrive at (stop being scared of flying)just cannot be reached by these people.

I guess people's percieved level of control over anything is very important to them mentally; If they can control their surroundings, they can protect themselves.

So in a car, the perceived level of control is high. The direct control of movement in a car seems to provide
satisfaction for most that they're in safe hands, their own.
But in a plane, despite any facts PROVING the fear is misplaced, the perceived level of control of a planes movement is next to none at all. Passengers are unable to change any aspect of a planes activities.

So simply put, people (with this fear) would rather feel in control of an unsafe vehicle (unsafe in comparison), than feel NO control in an extremely safe vehicle. This fear, which would include fearing a total inability to control anything on the aircraft such that they could personally avoid an accident, seems to totaly outweigh the more sensible way of looking at it. It's bizare becuse the available information would illistrate that planes are safer than other transport fullstop, and it would point out that the level of control people might feel in any type of transport is totaly irrelevant. It does not affect the chances of dying whatsoever. But people STILL prefer to feel 'in control', despite KNOWING their chances of death are higher. crazy brain defence mechanisms.

Quite interesting I rekon.

yeah. Control Freaks.

Crashing crosses everyones mind, but I just think "safest form of travel. Car is much more dangerous. Turbulance is just like a bus hitting a pothole." And Im sweet!

Just find a hot chick to perv on - always helps.

hahaha, man he's a crackup.

Oh yeah, about the phobia, you're right it is a control thing. The root cause I guess was a bad flight when I was a child, turbulence causing the plane to drop, bounce up and down and stuff :/ I totally freaked out and thought, s***, what would happen if a wing ripped off or something and said to myself I never want to fly again.

Since then I've had many people explain how safe it is, but there is thing part of my brain that says, BE AFRAID, THINGS WILL GO WRONG. I dunno, I guess it's a natural reflex sorta thing, to preserve my life through minimising risk.

Some people think I'm paranoid, but I don't think I am. I just try to avoid risky situations, and for some reason, my brain thinks flying is very risky.

The human brain is a weird thing, something I will never understand, though I've tried. You'd be surprised how much this phobia effects my life and I always said I wouldn't let fear control me, but I guess it has. Unless I choose to do something about it.

I think the wierdest phobia I've ever had, was a fear of alcohol (i.e. - consuming it). From 14->18 I didn't drink. Again cause of a bad experience when I was 14. Didn't let my mum cook with alcohol (even though I knew it evapourated). Didn't drink at schoolies. Didn't drink on my 18th birthday. So many times I was a victim of peer group pressure and even lost a bunch of friends because "if you don't drink with us, then you're not cool enough, so go hang out with your own kind." That turned out well for me though, cause I made some very good school friends who I still see today. Who I decided to get drunk with and really enjoyed it.

jahahaha, emo ftw.

So the moral of the story is, sack up and expose yourself to your phobias to overcome them? hahaha, could it be so simple.

I used to work on the 31st floor of a building and I couldn't sit near the window for fear of it falling out on me.

I am such a girl but I figure I have no need to being up high or close to edges in my every day life so I am good. No need to get over it just yet

I had a fear of lifts too, then my company relocated to the city on the 15th floor. My boss was like, wanna come see the new office? And I said sure, why not. I just got into the lift and pretended I didn't have a phobia (I was going to say, yeah well, you see, I forgot to tell you about my phobia of lifts, haven't been in since I was 12). I was like, nothing to fear, nothing to fear, it'll get to the floor and the doors will open. And they did.

Months later, I was going in a lift 4-5 times a day. Didn't like it, but forced myself to do it because I had to work and sure as f*** wasn't climbing 15 flights of stairs.

Even worked in a dodgey building where the lifts would regularly malfuction. Jumped in once, and pressed the floor and it just zoomed right past it and took me to the 20th floor. Now THAT is an adrenalin rush. I said to my mate, ohhh s*** man, we're going to punch through the roof and laughed. I think he was more scared than me. hahaha

well, it's practically impossible for a lift to freefall into the basement unless someone deliberately sabotages every safety mechanisms

see that "how stuff works" page on elevators, I'd find the address but cop it sweet

aircraft these days are over engineered.
why? because the cost of failure is so great.

between 1990 and 1999, british airways carried 700 million-ish passengers on 7 million-ish flights and not one of them died in a crash

eh? a whole decade and noone died? s*** ay.

according to official U.K. government statistics you are more likely to be killed by your trousers than in an aircraft crash.

i love flying, apart from being squished into a terribly small seat for however long, love it. :)

I flew back from Lyon, France to London today, it took about an hour, on the aproach to london we had choppy as turbulance, it was all over the place. I had a window seat and as we were comming down to land the plane was turning left and right at big angles, was a bit scary, but we landed fine.

All i can say about it is hakuna matata.
