Topic: HDD that doesn't "tick"

A mate of mine had a HDD that was silent, so it didn't make that annoying "ticking" sound.

I dunno what brand it was though.

Can someone tell me the brands that don't tick please? I hate that s***.

U know the clicking/ticking sound when the computer is "thinking"

Every computer I've ever seen does it, except this one my mate had.

They often have accoustic management software that you can adjust, I remember my old seagate let your choose "silent" mode which was slower, and "fast" mode which made noises but was faster.

Look at your HDD manufacturer's website.

Does it matter? The ticking is so quite on most HDs, I never hear it over the fan.

I can't say I've ever heard my drives ticking, but at least you would know if it was still working (that and the drive not doing anything actually).

samsung have been focussing their hds around being silent

Samsung 'Spinpoint' hard drives:
Samsung "SpinPoint"
-IDE or Sata (SATA300 Native Command Queuing (NCQ) HDD)
-7200rpm
-8MB Cache
-NoiseGuard
-ImpacGuard
-SilentSeek
-Features quiet FDB(Fluid Dynamic Bearing) Motor
-3-yr manufacturer warranty

-Competitive pricing.

I have afew of these (200-250gb ones), and I have 11 (seagate, maxtor and samsung) drives in my case in total, and I dont hear any noise come out of it.

Best bet is that your friend has one of these samsung drives though.. but instead of asking us what kind of drive your friend has, why not ask him?

That would be the logical thing to do, as if anyone ever does that these days.

WD JB Drives are pretty good. They are my pick of the bunch, i have an 80, 200 and 250gb JBs myself (IDE 8m cache is what JB signifies)
Seagate Barracuda IV's were pretty good also.(like the old 40 gig'ers)

Maxtor ones are not good. 120gig P0 (8m) drives are noiser than an old Seagate Medallist (ugh).

They are my only recommendations. I worked as a systems builder/repairer for quite a while and my head got in a mess over which were silent and which weren't.

The only ones i know for sure are these three.
