Or I will be next week, when my 20" Intel iMac arrives.

Anyway, I'm hoping there might be someone here who uses one for WoW. Long shot I know, but figured it was worth asking.

How would a stock iMac perform in WoW with only 512MB? Doable, or do I really need to go get another DIMM?

Also, if I install from scratch (From the collectors edition CD), what's the total amount of patches I'm going to have to get? What would the order be, is it straight to 1.9.3? Or is it minor to minor?

Would be good to get some feedback. I'd ask this on the WoW forums, but my account is currently deactivated, and will remain that way until 1.10 comes out.

Or I'll install Quake 4 on it too if you're not careful.

AFAIK wow mac version is all PowePC based code it will be emulated via rosetta (very slow), you be better off partition it for a winblows install.

I saw WOW running on an Intel iMac on Friday arvo. It looked to run alright, but I don't play WOW so I can't really say for sure if it was above average or not. I believe it is a universal binary already.

As for the 512MB, I have a 12" iBook G4 with 768MB and it feels only just enough for OS X 10.4.x. I'd go 1GB at least on my next machine, and am a little surprised the iMacs still only have 512MB.

1.9.3/1.9.4 is a universal binary.

I realised after ordering it that I only opted for the 128MB X1600 rather than 256MB. Hope that doesn't come back to bight me too bad :(

Oh well :(

ooh yeah I'd definitely get a gig at least. Even the base OS runs painfully with 512MB

yeah definately get a gig of ram for any mac, makes a crapload more difference then a gig in windows does (which is a fair bit in its own right)

as for wow, i ran it for a bit on my powerbook g4 1.5 with 512 ram, it was okay, ran about 20-50fps in 1280x854 res. so yeah if you get a gig of ram, you wont have any problem.

welcome to 'the dark side', unofficially known as the 'welcome to a world without windows', you'll love it

Got it from the Apple Store.
$294+GST for the 4GB Nano.
$2167+GST for the iMac.
Then I get $200 cashback.

so your buying a mac for wow..

Well, I'm not actually buying it for WoW. I'm buying it for work as I need something to RDP from, and so I have a nice 20" screen to watch TV on, without buying a 24" Dell.
Having a dual core processor to compile on too is a huge plus.

Hmm... I have to support these at work and they're a little buggy still.
Get an AppleCare Protection Plan - worth it in the long run. Otherwise if you need support and you're past 3 months you've got to cough up $49 for each issue - and we don't need another customer complaining that there's no support.

They also suck a bit because they don't run all of the old PowerPC programs yet. That said, they're scheduled to have that all done by the end of this month.

sadly, this is the general idea now. there's no money in selling the hardware. the real money is in the services.

it's interesting seeing how many of the new guys at work are both Mac/PC fluent now.

Sure can. Was broken in the last 24-48 hours. Have a look at http://onmac.net

People have been trying it out all day, and with the execpetion of the 20" iMac, it seems to work quite well (though certain thigns are capable of crashing the system completely, eg, WCPUID).

osx rocks for genral sufring/video editing/games granted their platform hasent got all the latest and greatest games, but still based on BSD *nix very secure and stable with no spyware/malware/virus issues.

i have a powerbook pismo 500 myself old skool back lappy and it rocks do all my dv video on it and surfing also play Q3@50 fps (not bad for ati rage 128)

and as if its gay, i reckon windows xp with all its virus/spyware/trojans/malware is more gay.

Final Cut Pro is seriously the only reason I could ever see for owning a mac over a PC, apart from the debatable security advantages.

Edit: Oops, does anyone have any other clear-cut advantages?

Ooh i don't know. Better functionality. Integrated software/hardware. Everything 'just works'. No stuffing around for drivers, no spyware/malware/adware/bloatware s***e that windows is just notorious for.

Then again, the inflexibility of not being able to just 'do something' really simple is f***ing frustrating. Of course it can be done, but you need an arcade knowledge and/or patient googling of the OS and terminal since it's all gumbified away from the user.. Plus no games :(

*edit* plus you get categorised with the rest of the mac community *aww it's just puuuuurfect!!*

agreed its limeted sofware wise, but once you have tried osx for grenral pc use i think you will find it's simplicity awesome, games wise still sux compared to winblows xp but x86 mac will change that with a option of instaling xp.

ps. once you used a pc since dos 5.xx days you will know what i am talking about, *nix rules.

So then you'd be paying twice the price, hardware wise, for a XP box with the option of running MacOS' limited worthwhile exclusive software library?
