hi all
im trying to set up a vpn so that i can connect to my Desktop from my Laptop from anywhere..

i have set up the connectoions on both and i get to the point where it is "Verifying Username and Password" then i get an error stating that the Remote computer failed to respond. as far as i can tell all my setting are correct..i think it may be giving me this error because im trying to connect to it while my laptop is connected to the same router but i dont see why that would be an issue.

my set up is Desktop----> Netgear PRV614v2 Router <----Laptop and other PC's.

i have opend port and forwarded port 1723 on my router, and set my firewall(McAffe firewall) to allow the Desktop on the port. i cant think of anything that could be worng with this set up..any ideas?

Edit: yes i have set up a user for the account lets just call him RemoteUser for now. and he has benn set up in the VPN connection.

Please note im NOT trying to set up PPPoE(Ponit to Point over Ethernet) im trying to set up PPP over Internet.

Well do you have a modem attached to your computer that will pick up this call ? Your router will have nothing to do with this VPN if this is what you are doing. I know what you are trying to do but you are mixed up I'd say :D

He's not physically "dialling in", he's using the internet to connect to his broadband link at home.

And sorry, I have no idea why it isn't working. What you've done sounds like it should work. Maybe your ISP doesn't allow "servers"?

ok here is what i have..

Cable modem ------> Netgear PRV614v2 Router <----Desktop and all my other PC's/Laptops

the problem that i have is that When it comes to Verify the username and Password the connection times out because according to the message "the remote computer did not respond"(the desk top in my case)

Edit: should mention im on Optus cable.

Well it's one or the other, PPP or not. He is getting mixed up. I would disable your firewall first and then try.

How many PCs on the inside of the firewall? Maybe it doesn't know which one to route it to? I know on my router, I need to specify the machine that is acting as a server, and then open that port on the firewall bit.

i thought thats what port forwarding is for, ill try setting my router to use Static IP address instead of DHCP

I use DHCP, so maybe that ain't it. From the way I understand it, port forwarding is based on the computer behind the firewall initiating the connection so the router knows where to route the replies. Because this is being initiated outside of the firewall, there needs to be something on the router to say "If I get a connection on port , send it to IP ".

I could be completely wrong though :)

i dont think its a port issue, cause it is acctually connecting to the desktop to the point where it has to verify the username and password, if it was having problems with the routing it wouldn't get to that point.

ok, if all your pcs are inside the router you aren't going to need to forward any ports. Port forwarding is only for outside the router connecting to computers inside it. Yes you will need for forward ports once you start trying to connect from outside but for now you won't need it.

On the desktop make sure you have set up an "incomming connection". I've set up some little VPN thing between my laptop and my desktop PC both inside the router (not connected from the internet) and there was no port forwarding involved, here's what I did.

DESKTOP PC:
right click my network places, properties.
create up new connection
set up an advanced connection
accept incomming cconnections
in the next window you'll see a list of devices you can have it accept incomming calls on, all I have is LPT1, but you just leave them all blank (unticked) and press next
allow vpn connections
select the users you wish to be able to connect, I've ticked myself
select the protocols/other s*** you want associated with this connection
once done, click the properties of your connection and go to the users tab & tick the require users to secure their passwords option
finish

LAPTOP:
righclick network places, properties
create new connection
connect to the network at my workplace
vpn connection (choice between dialup or vpn, choose vpn)
type a name, doesn't matter what you call it it's just descriptive, I called mine desktop
do not dial the initial connection option
hostname or IP, put in the IP of my desktop
finished

then just double click on it & enter the username/password. I have done no port forwarding or anything. kerio did pop up and ask me if I want to allow some connection or other I permitted it and away the connection went.

if its getting to the point of verifying username and password, it seems like u have the pc's setup but the firewall somewhere is blocking it.

With your test, are you attempting to connect using a local IP or your external IP?

Eds, im connecting to my my Global IP, as in the one given to me by Optus so technically its going...ohhh i think i know whats happening..im such a nub..

im connecting from my laptop wich is is connected to the same router as my desk top to an ip address wich is 210.x.x.x wich realy means that the laptop and the Desk top have the SAME internet(global) IP address....unless NAT takes care of that..im getting confused lol

one part right, one part wrong.

You are right, your a nub :P

Your on the wrong side of your router to be accessing it via the external IP. If you try to connect to your external IP, your connecting to your router on the lan side. Anyway, im not explaining it in detail, but when your at home, use the local IP to test, when your NOT at home, use the external IP and you should be fine.
