Anyone out there a non-drinker?
I'm just curious what you do to unwind, how you socialise, etc.. Do you go to pubs? Do you do other drugs instead? There is nothing worse than going to a pub or club sober, I can't do it. I figure the majority of non-drinkers are usually religious? I don't really care about going to pubs/clubs/parties, I think I've done enough of that for one lifetime, but what is the alternative besides sitting at home watching tv, playing computer games, or reading books? Is there like a place where all the non-drinkers go and hang out that I don't know about? Like a secret club? |

but what is the alternative besides sitting at home watching tv, playing computer games, or reading books? Uni, full/part-time work, team-based sport, martial arts, gym, language classes, archery, shooting, golf, one-month TAFE courses on random things (wordwork, sparky-work, car/bike maintenance), cycling, rock climbing, game of pool. Man, so many options ... |

lol. sucks to be you if you can't talk to people unless you're drinking. Don't get me wrong, I love drinking, but I can go out without it.
Most people don't drink 24/7 and still find a way to enjoy themselves... go play some sport or join the army or something. |

i'm religious and i drink, not to get smashed tho jus to enjoy a drink.
Dont goto clubs/pubs often usually just hang out with mates at someones house or go somewhere for coffee or what not. Believe it or not there are stacks of fun things to do that dont involve getting smahsed. |

i gave up getting drunk about 10years ago... it was fun when i was a foolish teenager but eventually i just didn't like the feeling of being drunk. it felt messy & foolish while being drunk & i got terrible painful hangovers really quickly after i stopped drinking... sometimes as quickly as 15mins after my last drink :(
i still don't mind a nice alcoholic drink though! i just don't get drunk anymore & i don't miss it at all. i still go out regularly to pubs & clubs & have no problems socialising... in fact, i'd say i had more problems socialising when i used to get drunk! it's a pretty fine line for me now... coz as i sed i still like a nice drink... like a nice scotch on the rocks or similar & i like the inner warmth of a few... but one too many & i'll pay in spades the next day :/ |

I have been off the grog since May.
My family still drink around me and I am the DD wherever we go. I thought people drinking around me while I couldn't would be a lot harder to deal with but it actually isn't that bad. It is the same as when I quit smoking, I craved the motions. It is the action of pouring a drink and tasting the sweet sweet juice that I think I miss the most, not the actual feeling of getting drunk. I tried one of those non alcholic champagnes once and it was just horrible... BLERGH. edit: spelling last edited by Kat at 16:47:59 24/Feb/06 |

It's very hard to fit in with friends who drink heavily because they do crazy s*** when they are drunk (like I did) and it's a bit hard to cope with it when you're sober. And you're instantly alienated because you're the "boring sober guy". Being sober around drunk people makes me nervous. And in a way, I think it's anti-social not to drink around people who are. But everyone I know drinks.

i use to be a non drinker for the longest time because I'd only ever really tasted different beers and wines and imo they taste like s***.... then i discovered Bourbon & Wild Turkey, i have an 8yr old bottle of Wild Turkey (50%) at home and it's some nice stuff.

I'm a non drinker. Only times ive gotten drunk is when the drinks were free.. just not worth spending $50+ to get drunk for me.
I socialise on trail bike rides mostly. |

Anyone out there a non-drinker?I wouldn't say I was a non drinker, but I drink very, very little. I haven't had a drink for about 3 months now. Ever since I got fairly serious about my fitness. I'm just curious what you do to unwindI jerk off a lot...na, I do what I do when I'm drinking...just because you aren't getting pissed doesn't mean you can't do the same things. how you socialise, etc..By opening my mouth and speaking. Do you go to pubs?Frequently. Do you do other drugs instead? No. There is nothing worse than going to a pub or club sober, I can't do it.What about cancer or HIV or something? It sounds like you just have sucky social skills. You shouldn't have to compensate with alcohol. I figure the majority of non-drinkers are usually religious?I belive god can f*** off and kiss my ass. I don't really care about going to pubs/clubs/parties, I think I've done enough of that for one lifetime, but what is the alternative besides sitting at home watching tv, playing computer games, or reading books? Is there like a place where all the non-drinkers go and hang out that I don't know about? Like a secret club?I cycle. I cycle a lot. 20-30Km a day usually. I also play games a lot and spend time with my girlfriend....I watch movies, listen to music and sometimes just head out and sit around doing nothing. I meet up with friends at the pub, at work, in the city...wherever. I don't see how your life can be so heavily impacted by not being able to drink....what the hell is wrong with you. last edited by Twisted at 18:27:01 24/Feb/06 |

I don't see how your life can be so heavily impacted by not being able to drink....what the hell is wrong with you. I would say, an acute case of: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=alcoholism It's better that I don't drink at all. I mean it's fun and stuff, that's why I've been doin it for years, but I've had enough and no longer want to get smashed every weekend. Pretty much everytime I socialise, I'm getting pissed, or working out a way to. It's not that uncommon. It just looks serious when you write it down. Anyway, I went back to the gym today and I feel good. If there is one thing that will keep me off the piss, it's weights cause I know how detrimental it is to training. |

I just get on the piss saturday night. I figure thats my time to unwind and have some fun. Going to a club sober is stupid, its not nearly as fun. If im sober ill just stay in and have a quiet night, maybe go to dinner somewhere or whatever but not clubs.

it felt messy & foolish while being drunk & i got terrible painful hangovers really quickly after i stopped drinking... That was the killer for me. Its not a matter of drinking or not drinking, or even being smashed or not, its about behaving appropriately to the situation and social setting. When I go out on my bucks night (hah I'm gonna jag 2!) I'm gonna get pretty dented. But being around mildly drunk, articulate and intelligent people when you're toasted is really unpleasant. |

yeah i'm a non-drinker
unwind: surf/music/games socialize: surf/hang out at home/basketball pubs: no clubs: rarely, it's boring and only for dancing/seeing if any decent females are around drugs: none religious: no, i just don't suck at life secret clubs: none to my knowledge, but you just meet people doing what you do ... most of my friends are either neighbours/housemates/old housemates, surfers or people i met through work. you also meet their friends, it's a snowball effect. |

Hi, My name is Scooter and I haven't had a drink in 13 months.
No, Serious. No other drugs either. Brought up religious, but no. Havent set foot inside church since I was about 10. Never plan on going back (Unless the future Wifey, yet to meet, wants a church wedding. Even then i'll try swing something else) I use to get drunk all the time, Spent most of my time @ Uni in the Pub with the like of nF... Went out heaps to the city and parties, whatever... Still spend most of my time @ Uni in the Pub. Now I just play pool and talk. Exactally the same, -Beer. Still go to the city, when I can. Other things involve; 4wd'n, Water Skiing, Camping, Gaming, Pool (City/My place/Mates place), beach, parties, anything else... Drinking is an *addition* to having fun (for some), it's not the *reason* for having fun. |

this is an extremely interesting thread that i just stumbled upon because my girlfriend just walked out on me because i said she couldn't drink tomorrow night..
now before you get all natzi on me, i'm the last person who would tell a girlfriend what to do, but it was one of the provisions of us getting back together just over a week ago that it would be if she doesn't drink at all for 3 months and then occasionally after that... she's a terrible drunk and she gets extremely violent when she's drunk.. she hates me and loves everyone else.. she actually bashed the s*** out of me one night and there was nothing i could do but try and stop her.. so that's when i decided i had enough now she's s***ty at me cos i said no to tomorrow night, but i can have fun drinking or not drinking.. if i drink i'll have 3-4 just to break the ice a bit, but i can get my crunk off with or without alcohol ;) i think it's incredibly sad that people need alcohol. she says "she can't have fun when she's drinking" and she's actually said she "needs alcohol" i honestly think she has a problem but she won't admit it.. her mum, and all my mates have seen her bad side to drinking yet she still won't admit to it and gets the s***s when i say she has a problem |

Mav, I'll take a stab and guess she's about 19 years old? She sounds like 1000 other chicks that age. They all have massive self-esteem and confidence issues, so they need the booze.
She definately has problems, and the boozing is just a symptom of them. Yes, I watch Dr. Phil. :) |

meh u just contradicted yourself in what u said, but u know her better than we do.
if she was really confident then she wouldnt need to be induced by grog...thats my point. but yeh, whatever. sounds like she's a pain in the ass, i'd find a new one :) |

hahah.. if only it was that easy, unfortunatly i'm in love with this girl, and she's been there from day 1 of me getting sick again, we have the best time aside when she gets on the grog..
and i don't mean she's not confident when she's out and not drinking, just she won't dance cos she doesn't like dancing, where if she's f***ed off her face, of course she likes it.. lol it's like me not liking wankas when im out, but if i'm drunk i'll talk to any jo blow :P |

It's not a confidence thing for me, it's really just to get me in the mood to be social. Otherwise I'm an introvert. Nothin to do with confidence for me. And it's also a genetic thing too don't forget.
I've had girlfriends with drinking problems too. They never change. I even told a girlfriend one Saturday night I didn't wanna drink and she got upset and I said she was going to go out with her friends who wanna drink. So I ended up going out drinking to drown my sorrows and talk to randoms about how much of a retarded girlfriend I have, and ended up bumping into her, hahaha. RETARDED f***ING TIMES I WILL NEVER LIVE AGAIN. (and yeah she was young and dumb, don't like young girls at all) Sadly, once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. Someone once described it to me as, "I used to be an alcoholic with a drinking problem, now I'm just alcoholic who doesn't drink". Kinda makes sense to me. |

I gave up drinking when I turned 18 (32 now), it was no fun once it was legal. Im not religious or am I into any form of illegal drugs. I can still go out with people to clubs etc. but I like to go where you can talk without having to raise your voice. Socializing with friends is a good way to unwind.

I have been quite the non drinker lately...
my reasons... i have found something even more satisifying. and yes it is f***en kfc... i just can't get enough of the s***, i get on the biggest highs when i eat a 7 piece-feed original recipe, large chips, 1.25Litre mountain dew, and an optional sara lee choc caramel cheesecake. but f*** i eat this s***, and i feel like i have just won a million dollars or something. i'll tell you a story, like, im not hooked on the stuff so much now... but about 8 months ago, when i was eating like a madman, i would be driving home from work, and i'd just think about kfc and no bulls***, i would start drooling... one of my biggest problems though, i like to decimate a 7 piece feed in the car on the way home from work regularly ... but my hands get so greazy, and my steering wheel gets so f***en slippery ? is there any special gloves i can use or a special ointment i could purchase that would prevent this ? |

Go out and pay megabling for booze (I only drink spirits) and then pay for cabfare home? oh yes please. No, I'd rather just go out, stay sober drink water/overpriced orange juice and drive my own ass home, and all my friends. At least then I know they're not going to drink/drive or be raped by some homicidal homosexual deviant taxi driver. Plus I'm kind of crazy insane enough as it is without alcohol or drugs.

Go out and pay megabling for booze Don't forget the VERY good chance of vomiting up ALL the booze you just had, in a sense wasting the money you spent on it even more. |

I'm not a real big drinker, usually have it every now and then in a BeerFa (Beer+Fifa) tourny with my mates or when over a mates' place. On a rare occasion I'd go to a club and get trashed and crash at someone else's place. Problem being there's no decent clubs near my place so taxi isn't a viable option.
I reckon if you shun anything in life you are usually missing out on an experience. Drinking's fun in moderation and the odd binge here and there. If not for anything else, at least to provide some wicked stories later on. |

Anyone out there a non-drinker?
Yes, but I have to admit that I have taken the odd sip/glass of alcohol over the period I have called myself a non-drinker. I'm just curious what you do to unwind, how you socialise, etc.. Do you go to pubs? Do you do other drugs instead? There is nothing worse than going to a pub or club sober, I can't do it. I don't do anything special to unwind. I usually just sit at home etc and do whatever it is you do at home. I tend to agree that going to a pub/club and spending time with drunk people while sober is tough and not the best of situations, but personally, I don't go to those places because I know I wouldn't enjoy it. Sure I know I'm missing out on fun times that everybody seems to have but if I was drinking to excess like everybody does chances are I wouldn't remember those fun times anyway and sure I do feel left out when people say "we'll go out for a drink later" but for other reasons I wouldn't be there anyway. All the times that I've drunk alcohol in my life (and those aren't that numerous (I'm 18 and I never went to any wild parties in High School and schoolies was mostly a dry affair)) I haven't had that good a time and things usually go badly ie fights with friends, rejections from girls (who ever says alcohol gives you more confidence with girls is right but they fail to mention that girls don't take you as seriously therefore burning your chances). So in my life alcohol is generally associated with bad times and for that reason I'm not a big fan of it. I figure the majority of non-drinkers are usually religious? Don't religious people drink the blood of christ every sunday at church? You know they don't actually have stores of Christ's blood and they use holy wine instead? So technically religious people can't be totally non-drinkers if they go to church every sunday. After reading this thread I would have to say that if you want to meet people and socialise you'll just have to suck it up and go to pubs/clubs. There is nothing contageous about spending time with people that drink (unlike smoking). I guess I'll have to suck it up and just go places where people drink (just after the smoking laws come into force) because I can't spend my life at home. However, my main friend thinks it's stupid that I don't drink (well she doesn't agree with my bad time theory) and wants me to start drinking again. But after reading this thread and seeing how other people have made the decision not to drink I'm starting to think it's quite acceptable to not drink or only have a few drinks (which I suppose is what I could do with my friend). |

Drink if you want; don't drink if u don't want - either way is perfectly acceptable and it's ur choice. Not everyone who goes out to pubs/clubs is blind drunk and incapable of decent conversation so there will always be other ppl around to talk to even if ur friends are drunk. I normally only a have a few drinks if I'm out - my personal opinion is that it's ok to have a few and be a little tipsy but I'm not really into the getting blind drunk thing. Personal safety plus I prefer to remember what I've done the night before. Each to their own tho. |

What a sad thread.
If you "need" alcohol for any reason. You are an alcoholic. And if you can't work out how to live a normal life with out it... again alcoholic. Go seek professional help. |

If you "need" alcohol for any reason. You are an alcoholic. The definition of an alcoholic is a person who has one drink, and cannot stop after that. Not that thing you said. |

If ur vomitting already, i'd say u probably don't want any more alcohol being absorbed into your system. What I was getting at is say you go out for the night and get absolutely hammered, spending say...$80 - $100 on alcohol (Being a non drinker I'm unsure if that amount of money would be relevant). To me that money has been wasted, you've past the "limit" where drinking is fun and now you're truly feeling sorry for your self (If you can feel anything at all). Then you bring it all back up, and vomiting is never fun, so now you've spent all that money, feel like s***, with a mouth NO ONE is going to kiss, and probably have half of the vomit staining your favorite shirt. To me all that seems a total waste. |

True taggs, but not alot of people do. Drive through the city/valley early Saturday or Sunday morning and you'll see all the left overs from the night before, those without the self control. I truly don't see the attraction of getting yourself that drunk.

It makes you feel refreshed and ready for even more drinking. with a mouth NO ONE is going to kissShe can't taste the vomit if she has vomited too :D and probably have half of the vomit staining your favorite shirt.Only if you are a vomiting newb :P |

fpot ... sorry but your definition seems incorrect.
clicky for a test Another simpler one is the CAGE test. Answer yes to 2 of these and you probably are. 1. (Cut down) Have you ever felt you needed to Cut down on your drinking? 2. (Annoyed) Have people Annoyed you by criticising your drinking? 3. (Guilt) Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking? 4. (Eye opener) Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover? Another clicky Or AA's 12 questions, answer yes to 4 or more and you are an Alco.
To me it seems simply "does it negatively and repeatedly/continually effect your life". Would be a more accurate description then "have 1 drink and you can't stop". |

It appears we are both wrong, this is from wikipedia
Alcoholism is a primary chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, mostly denial. Each of these symptoms may be continuous or periodic. |

I knew you'd say that.
Impaired control over drinking. When I said we were both wrong I meant our definitions were both oversimplified, and only covered singlular aspects of the correct broader definition. |

In actual fact, you're both wrong. The CAGE questionnaire and AA questions are not diagnostic - they are only used as a screening tool to perhaps indicate there MAY be a problem.
FYI (you only have to keep reading if you really want to know): To be classified as an "alcoholic", one must meet the criteria for alcohol dependence according to the DSM-IV, which is the psychiatric diagnostic manual for all mental health conditions. The criteria includes such things as tolerance, withdrawal, unsuccessful efforts to control use or cut down and so on. Alcohol dependence, or alcoholism, is preceded by alcohol abuse (ie what I did on Friday night at the Regatta...) |

I drink a s***load of piss an rarely do I get a hangover (drink s*** loads of water before you go to sleep).
To be honest, I don't recall a Fri or Sat night in over 17 years (I'm 37 next month) where I haven't gotten on the piss. I'm not an agro drunk by any means (people who get agro on the piss should definately stop drinking) and generally as a rule only drink XXXX Bitter. On the odd occasion I'll have a couple of bourbans, scotch or tequilla with an occasional red wine (hate the taste of white wine) thrown in when having a nice meal. I can have other types of booze in the house an not touch it nor feel inclined to do so. I've only recently decided to not have any grog on school nights tho by way of apology to my body after years of trying mightily to reduce my blood content and replace it with alcymehole. Ah well, whatever floats your boat I guess. |

Yeah well, I'm havin a break from booze indefinitely, and I'm not craving it. I sure don't miss the bad hangovers and anxiety. Socially, it's all good, unless I have to socialise with drunk people, cause that's annoying and I end up wanting to drink just to fit in. Being the only sober person is s***. It's very much a peer group pressure thing I guess. That's what got me into it in the first place.
As for chicks, when you're pissed it's hard to get sober girls, but drunk girls like drunk boys. Just like sober girls like sober boys. (it's not a bad theory, probably not true for everyone, but has some truth in it, from my experiences) I'm not in denial and just think it's time I had a break. Alcoholic, alcohol abuser, or whatever label you can muster, really means stuff all to me. I don't subscribe to traditional psychology methods and wouldn't ever seek help for a problem I can simply solve through lame QGL threads, and my own thoughts and philosophy. Thanks guys, your opinions have helped :) |

Well, I'm going out now, to drink myself into oblivion. Cause I'm loser, fail at life etc.. whatever the f*** all you wanks think I am. Yes I am emo, and I will always be emo, it's not an insult to me. And my favourite emotion is anger, so watch your f***ing mouth, cause sometimes I get real angry. You got a f***ing problem? Step up.

I love my piss, but I don't need to drink to have a good time. Most of the time I only drink when I go out to stay awake, as soon as I stop hitting the booze, I get tired. |
