Google weds email and messaging

GOOGLE married its email and instant messaging services today in a union designed to streamline online communications.

More info (with pics) can be found here: http://mail.google.com/mail/help/chat.html

Seems pretty cool although many of my regular contacts are still hotmail noobs, so dunno if i will use this much anyway. It hasnt been activated in my account yet (but the chats section in the leftmenu has).

ps. gmail rocks. if you dont use it, you sux.

Do I need to have Talk installed on the computer for it to work within Gmail? I can see my Chat history, but I don't have my quick contacts listed in my mail window.

Never mind:

7. What's the difference between this and Google Talk?

Gmail's new chat features, while integrated with the Google Talk network, do not allow you to make or receive calls to your friends over your computer. You still need to download the Google Talk Windows client for that. This download also allows you to be online all the time without having Gmail or your browser open. We think it's worthwhile to use both products. They are free, after all.
