OPTUS has begun shifting its 200,000-plus DSL customers across to its new copper wire based broadband network in a move that could help wipe more than $1 billion a year from Telstra's revenues. Story |

By moving users to their own network, Telstra's rivals pay only the monthly access charge for the copper wires - known as the unbundled local loop, or ULL - instead of monthly line rentals and local call resale Before anyone gets the wrong impression, they will still use Telstra infrastructure. The good part is that they can provide better services instead of being limited by services that Telstra re-sell at high $$$. |

dis-assembling the network. :( I suppose neccessary but futile.
going to be interesting after they upgrade to FTTN and all these guys are stuck on 5Mbit. last edited by dRanged at 19:24:10 18/Jan/06 |

I don't see why everyone's so proud of Optus when many other ISPs have been taking the same action for quite some time now.
I'd be much more excited if they hadn't pulled the plug (or at least delayed, pending some orgasmic announcement) on offering decent speeds from their DSL equipment. |

hmm seems i must explain myself.
back in the olden-day times the was once only two main places to get any kind of broadband. Telstra and Optus. during these dark times Optus 'the knight in shinning armour' dished out cans of love while Telstra forced their cans of stinky hurt onto all. All through the ages Optus has been giving us better cans and better plans. at times forcing telstra to improve plans and in some cases also the cans. As the ages drive ever onwards some of us never forget the Knight shinning amoungst the cans of stinkyness and pain, holding out his hand of love filled with cans of alcohol, weed and E's. the very essence of love. last edited by Fuknukle at 23:02:15 18/Jan/06 |

I would never ever go back to Telstra. Never in a million years. Only because you never paid your last bill with them before you moved to optus =P |

yay! so.. so... our government, using our tax payer monies, gets telstra (still really a government quango) to lay all the cable networks, route them through thier exchanges & basically do all the hard work involved in creating network infrastructure. then telstra rent some of it to optus who complain to the government that its not fair they have to pay rent when thier competitor telstra doesn't. so the government just hand it all to optus & all our monies go straight to singapore (singtel owns optus). um... yay?

Only because you never paid your last bill with them before you moved to optus Nah, I don't owe Telstra money, although they send me out letters all the time saying I owe them 5c. I'm like what the f*** and on the letter it says not to pay the amount. Telstra are f***ing idiots. I wish I had a scanner because I'd upload the image. |

Fair enough Demon, but are you saying telstra dont make enough money?
Tho of course thats not your real point tho, which is Optus money is foreign money. Good point i hadnt thought about that side of things. but isnt it already 49% foreign owned and about to be totally sold off if howard gets his way? |

ahh don't pay any attention to me fuknukle... i'm still just bitter that the general public couldn't see that the privatisation of our telecommunications in this country was a bad idea. only a massive government funded telecommunications company, such as telecom once was, could afford to run out new technology networks & infrastructure on such a large scale as all of australia where the profits would have to be very long term because of the initial outlay.
as to whether telstra make enough money... if they were government owned I'd say 'who cares'. the money just goes back into the system & we could then lobby the government for improvement with thier telco profits. however now that it is private it will go into phat foriegn ceo salaries. i fear that once all the telcos are private only CBD deistricts will get new technology networks & no new big-scale infrastructure will be created. singtel aren't here to improve australias telecommunications... they are here for phat profits & when that dries up coz they have used all the free infrastructure provided they will most likely sell off. :/ |

Exactly bloody right.
Your last post has been my thoughts ever since i got off the boat in Australia November 99. Even tho im a kiwi ive always felt strongly thats its a totally stupid thing to do selling off country assests. aus post, telstra, energex etc should be all government owned as to whether telstra make enough money... if they were government owned I'd say 'who cares'. the money just goes back into the systemexactly. the thing is tho it WAS making money, but even if it was only just turning a profit its still a huge advantage to australians people, technology-wise, money-wise and future-wise. the problem is that they sold/selling a monopoly. telstra owns all the phones lines which effects phone and adsl. luckily optus has their own cable network which tend to keep telstras cable service at bay somewhat, stopping them charging uddles. so much more could be said but eh... whats it gonna do |
