I'm looking at getting a second car. It needs to seat at least 5 people (most of them kids) in relative comfort. Maximum cost $25k.

Begin suggesting.... now!

If you're from newzealand you'd probably want a big van with abut 15 family members inside. Otherwise some kind of a 4x4 with 7-8 seats would be good?

What do you want out of the car apart from seating 5 people?

my commodore wagon seats 5 people

Why would you get a 4wd just to seat 5 people? I'd lean more towards a minivan or something. Surely it would use less petrol, our old mazda van didn't use that much.

Only because it's sexier and better than Eds's choice.

But seriously, go for a Subaru Liberty!

We already have a 7 seater. This more a small/medium car as a second car, cause one is becoming a bit of strain. It would rarely need to hold more than 2-3 people, but 5 seats is ideal.

I am, just thought I'd get opinions from other people...

Currently a Holden Vectra a couple of years old (preferrably the V6) is winning. My wife likes a new Hyundia Elantra for some reason.

The Liberties are nice! See, I would never have considered that, hence the thread.

the vectras have a tendency to throw timing belts

if you go that way make sure its been replaced (needs to be done every 60k apparently)

The ones I was looking at were around the 20,000-40,000kms mark, so that's a handy thing to be aware of...

That Liberty is giving me a bit of a chubby, I'm definitely going to look into them... Or was that because Jim started talking about 4WDs?

The fuel stuff has me a bit scared.. And I know that the Mrs will never drive it. I did consider a Jimny, but it's too damn small. Is there something in between that's worthwhile? It'd be nice if the second car could do something a bit more interesting than go to the shops and back in style.

Rav 4 *shrugs*

I'd still go a Toyota Echo/Yaris. I know they are small but they have this funky sliding back seat/bench feature that you can use to too accomodate more passenger legroom or more lugguge space. They are insanely fuel efficient something like 6litres/100klms.

I know 3 ppl that have Echo's and they all rave about them. An excellent 2nd car if you ask me.

Get a Liberty, but then straight away go get an after market clutch. We've had the clutch on ours replaced by Subaru, with updated revisions, I think 4 times and it is still s*** and f***ed. Aside from that it's a good car.

New 4-cyl camry or
AUIII/BA gas falcon or
VY Commodore.

Anything else and you're wasting your money.
