A lot has changed since the first movies came out over 100 years ago where people ran out of the cinemas in fear for their lives after a train came steaming towards them on a screen.

These days we see countless instances of violence, profanity, drugs and sex in most movies. Though we've become so conditioned to these issues that they rarely ever make us think twice about them.

So i was wondering, when was the last time you saw something that truly shocked you.

I recently watched American History X for the first time, and i can say that i have never had an image burn into my memory like the scene where the skinhead makes the black dude bite the curb before crushing his head. Very cringeworthy!

Everytime I walk past the TV and see a glimpse of Rove or Everybody Loves Raymond, I am both shocked and disappointed in humanity.

the end of Saw after he has chopped his foot off and his face is going pale cause he is losing all his blood

the chopping off his own foot part is cringeworthy, i dunno what it was about the above stated bit but it made me feel sick, and i consider myself to be pretty galvanised to most of the s*** we see these days like, real executions on the internets and s***.

nah. hearing some conversations and background noise during online gaming (teamspeak and inbuilt coms) has made me immeadiatly disconnect though.

perhaps there's a market there waiting to be exploited by the mass media

most rescent thing that made me cringe (big time) was Requiem For a Dream. Absolutly awesomely made movie, but some parts of it esp his arm at the end, made me feel physically ill.

Yes movies shock me, but not anything that is shown on TV or at the Cinemas. Independant films that the OFLC has never seen are where it's at...

The toe thing, Prison Break.

Everybody loves raymond is bareable. A_W is clearly the single most witty human on our humble earth for that "Everybody Hates Raymond" zinger.

I'd like to think i'm pretty detuned to most stuff, but things like fingers/toes/arms/legs being sawn off or chopped off still make me cringe.

its actualy a bit sad to see we have become so desensitized (spelling?) because it has a double effect. movies are all about the same now days and its rare you see anything that makes you look away (saw 2 comes to mind with the key in the guys eye, and the needle pit... ugh, i had to look away then). this also causes problems on tv because people are so used to this, that TV shows are getting worse and worse in language, their themes and such. even simpsons which until around season 9 or so were just stupidly funny to watch. now its sad to see its turned into a south park clone as there are so many adult themes are put in that show now its disapointing. then again after how long simpsons has been on the air, i think its about time they canceled it before it gets even worse than it is now. remember ages ago when you couldn't swear on TV? and how movies were edited (speed and die hard 3 come to mind) now if its on late enough, they dont edit them at all.

^ Didn't read too much above

Seinfeld = suc
Every Body Loves Raymond = False (die in a fire wearing nylon clothes)

All the best TV/Cinema gimmicks at best get a "oh damnnn" or "boom HEADSHOT" sort of effect out of me cause in the end, it is onlt TV/Cinema

I still try to forget some s*** I've seen in reality over the years that just cant be explained if you weren't there

$5 says you've only just clued into the the always present underlying adult themes.
Becoming aware has it's drawbacks eh?

Seinfeld = suc

WTF?

Seinfeld was and still is one of the best comedies around. Every single ep was hilarious. Recently I started watching Seinfled from season 1 and I'm to season 9 and every ep was damn awesome.

Anyway, getting back to be desensitised. Nothing offends me anymore although I cringe when I see people being operated on. Watching someone getting their head blown clean off in a film has no impact.

No nothing on tv or in the movies shock me, the only thing that does is the jokes attempted at Hermitech's house.

movies don't exactly shock me I don't think, probably because I know it isn't real, I know the foot/arm/leg being cut off/crushed/broken/eaten by lobsters with magnets is just a prop and the guy isn't really getting hurt.

I think the real question shouldn't be does tv shock you. The real question is, if you saw it for real would you care, or has tv desensitised you so much you'd just go meh and walk around the armless corpse laying on the ground?

Got a cringe out of saw 2 in parts but as people have already stated, events that are somewhat out of the ordinary (not like the classic action movies where its just bullets) normally get a cringe out of me.

Oh yeah and another, at the end of Ong Bak, where the guy who takes adrenaline, breaks the leg of Ting's friend. It gets broken from like the kneecap :( and directly upwards. Very painful

sleeper cell tv show recently, the guy getting stoned while buried up to his head in the sand..pretty bad.

some things in 24, but I guess thats more story related stuff, like jack having to kill his boss chappelle in s3e18.

that was intense s***.

Seinfeld has it's moments, but it's not the funniest show on the planet it's made out to be. Yanks are so far up themselves. Another thing, that friends series, praise the lord jesus for us being granted such divine entertainment. (end sarcasm.) It retired, nobody cares, there's 100 shows like it.

The list of supposed brillience in television goes on.

Everybody loves raymond = can't stand it, not one giggle out of me.
Seinfeld is great to watch, but its not funny enough to laugh at it. Infact, i've never laughed at any sitcom show ever, except if the joke is so pathetically unfunny i'll laugh.

I'll agree with Cannibal Holocaust, one of the only horror movies to really get to me.

For the most part though the media that still gets to me is that with realistic violence, not the cartoonish sensationalism of most hollywood tripe. Domestic violence and realistic urban warfare really get me so Boyz n the Hood, Once Were Warriors that sort of thing. TV that I'm loving but still makes me squeal and look away a lot is The Shield.

Nin video for the album broken(I think) was pretty shocking at the time. Some awesome film clips tho.

I think it's not getting desensitised to the violence but having a clear concept of what is fiction. Seeing someone get hit by a car in a movie isn't very shocking anymore but seeing someone get hit in real life is. I think the most shocking movies would be ones that are based on real events as the actor plays a surrogate role for someone who would have been in that situation.
