Anyone here actually celebrate it? Go trick or treating or even have treats at home ready for those who do?

Several years ago, yes. Was fun to walk the streets of the local area and try to extort $$ or food from people who have no idea what your on about. specially people who speak english badly. It's not really a big thing at all in Aus. Stupid yank holiday. Kindly list your address here however Kat and we can go round and collect treats from you. |

it's a Was around long before the Celts were a recognised people and was tied to many different mythos and cultures. Christianity renamed it (along with Easter) to what we know it as today as they realised that they couldn't stop the people celebrating the solstices etc according to pagan rituals so they just went "can't beat em, join em" an started to pretend that these dates were important to their f***ed up way of thinking last edited by HERMITech at 14:48:37 28/Oct/05 |

I like to consider myself a multicultural person - let's respect the right of everyone to celebrate whatever they want (yes, including the Americans :P) and join in on the festivities!

^^ Close, but not by a long shot
Pagans are by definition any religious belief that doesn't follow either Christian, Muslim, or Jewish tenets One who is not a Christian, Muslim, or Jew, especially a worshiper of a polytheistic religion last edited by HERMITech at 14:55:11 28/Oct/05 |

What kind of culture endorses 'trickery' (which usually involves damage to property) if you don't give random people free candy ?

According to what can be reconstructed of the beliefs of the ancient Celts, the new year began around November 1, a day referred to in modern Gaelic as Samhain (meaning "end of summer"). Just as sundown meant the start of a new day, shorter days signified the start of the new year; therefore the harvest festival began every year on the night of October 31.
The exact customs observed in each Celtic region differ, but they generally involve the lighting of fires and the reinforcement of boundaries, across which malicious spirits might cross and threaten the community. |

Well yes, but I'm a goth it goes with the territory.
Actually I grew up celebrating Halloween anyway, I think mostly due to my my mother who's Basque (Spanish). We always used to go trick or treating and then go to the Toowong Cemetary late at night (and she wonders why I turned out this way). There's about a million things on for the goth scene on Saturday night. Yay. |

Oh and yes, I always make sure I have candy, and so do my parents though last year no one came. Prior to that though we used to get a lot of people Trick or Treating in Paddington; though admittedly a lot of these were adult Americans and goths :P

Halloween rules - it's damn near like Christmas here - decorations everywhere. Lots of chocolate and s***e..
Also, some of the TV stations are running nonstop horror movie marathons. My walls have echoed the sounds of horror music and teenage girls screaming as they are brutally slaughtered... Bring it! |

Its more like a holiday for paedophiles and kidnappers. The only day where they don't have to stalk little kids 'cos they just randomly turn up at their door steps. |

If we have to have a Yank tradition like Halloween forced on us then I think its only fair that the 'Septic Tanks' have to celebrate Australia Day .... thats even if they know what it is!? Although I think they r that stupid theyd call it 'Crikey' Day.

Although I think they r that stupid theyd call it 'Crikey' Day. You'd be surprised at how many Aussies don't know what Australia day represents. I remember reading this thing in the kids section in the paper about what kids thought Australia Day represented. There were crazy responses ranging from the day Captain Cook found Australia to something about Terrorists. |

Just had a couple smart motuhed little pricks come along swearing and generally causing a ruckus up the road.
So when they came up to the door and cried out (obviously a little drunk) "Trick or treat" I merely showed them the business end of my rifle and told them to move along. |

Haven't seen any of the prequels before but that was pure ass. Especially with busta rhymes and his "martial arts". Very amusing. last edited by Booyah at 22:00:06 29/Oct/05 |
