Well, before I start, I'd like to share the fact that at the Southbank screening, some 20-something guy brought his 3 month old baby (yes, 3 MONTHS!!) in a pram, as well as his 2 year-old son. I usually disagree with the fact that violence in movies and games causes real-life violence, but these kids will be messed up later in their lives after being exposed to violence so early in their childhood. Who the hell brings a BABY to see DOOM!
Alright, now to the movie. I had rock-bottom expectations upon entering the cinema. I expected to lose braincells and have my childhood raped, George-Lucas-style. Hence I was quite surprised when I stepped out of the cinema, noting that Doom was one of the best movies I've seen in the last year. The highlights include: The only downsides I can think of is lack of Hell (as we all knew) and it was weird hearing The Rock swear. But really, in my opinion the movie was the exact opposite of the trailer. It was cool, clever, funny and very enjoyable. I'd recommend it to all Doom fans. It was surprisingly good! I might go and see it again sometime, something I rarely do. Though if you played Doom3, had a cry that it was too dark and alt-tabbed back into CS (with your gamma set to 99999), you probably won't like this. |

Yes I know there's another Doom thread but it was already into page 2 without any serious reviews, so I created a new one.

I hated doom3's darkness but I went back to cs because my computer just couldn't run doom3 :p dark movies I don't mind because I'm not the one who controls the action I can just sit back & watch it. Dark games s*** me because why the hell would I want to pay $90 when I can't see anything? Anyway, good to hear this isn't crap because I'll probably see it this weekend. |

I quite liked it, but then I went in expecting it to be total s***, and ended up quite enjoying it. I dont know if it was due to my incredibly low expectations, or the fact I'd had three pints beforehand, but yeah, it was good fun. I wouldn't go anywhere close to saying its the best movie I've seen in years though, it was just a good, fun, mindless zombie blasting movie.
Pros ----- - The Rock - The BFG and the scene where the rocks get the BFG was cool. - First person bit was actually rather cool and didn't absolutely suck balls like I expected. - Zombies Cons ----- - No Hell - No Cyberdemon - Two much sneaky stuff and suspense building in parts and not enough zombie blasting. |

Just saw it then. I thought it was fairly dongs. I thought the first person bit was fairly lame (a few people in the cinema laughed at it) and as Khel said, there were a few bits that could have benefitted from a bit more zombie blasting.
Still, it's not a Uwe Boll movie. |

Let's hope they make enough profit so that they can make a sequel that will most likely be closer to the games. It has all been set up for it and would make perfect sense. I guess that was probably their intention just in case the film flopped.

Saw this tonight at Indro. I must say, as with most other people in this thread who have also seen it, I went in with exceedingly low expectations. I don't know if that affected how much I enjoyed this movie, I suspect it did. Having said that, I REALLY ENJOYED THIS MOVIE!
POSSIBLE SPOILERS! Good (if stereotyped, which is irrelevent in a mindless action movie) characters made up for an entertaining movie going experiance. Good mix of action and suspense. Dr Carmack made me lol. Also I loved how they kept saying stuff like "it's game time" and "go to hell" and other stuff along those lines. Also loved how when the rock picked up the BFG (officially named big force gun in the movie) he goes "big f***ing gun." I must say that the 1st person bit was totally awesome. It's true I burst out laughing and pretty much couldn't stop for the duration of the scene, but it was more through sheer enjoyment like how you laugh when you're on a rollercoaster, than when you laugh at something being so s***. Spike from press gang was lolworthy as pinky and even more lolworthy as the chainsaw victim. Karl Urban was a madc*** as the doom marine. I didn't feel like they dragged it out at all, didn't check my watch once. I went into this movie expecting some kickass violence and explosions. That's exactly what I got. While the whole "omg genetic mutation extra chromasome virus" was a bit retarded, I think that it served its purpose as the cause of all the mayhem and not too much focus was wasted on it. END SPOILERS!!! This movie is lots of fun! Go expecting (god knows why) an outstanding storyline, complex characters and intelligent dialogue and you'll have a s*** time. Go realising that this is an action movie with explosions and shooting s*** and isn't meant to be taken entirely serious and you'll have a ball like I did. All the people throughout the internet bitching on about "OMGWORSTMOVIEEVER" really just need to realise what they're watching. I can't f***ing believe the number of people out there raging on about how s*** the storyline is and how s*** the acting is or whatever other compaint d*******s are coming up with these days. Basically I can sum it up by saying that anyone who expects more than some damn entertaining action from a movie based on a first person shooter is a f***ing moron. |

i saw it tonight and it wasn't that half bad. after everything i've read about it and all the people bagging it (including me) i was surprised at how decent it was. i say decent because it wasn't a smash blockbuster, but it was still enjoyable. the best game to movie conversion (apart from FFVII: Advent Children) ive seen to date. a few things that should of been added to make it more doomish however,
1.) marines should of worn the classic "doom-guy" armor 2.) more gun fights with a larger variety of monsters. (hell knights, imps and zombies get a bit boring after awhile) 3.) the storyline about the whole dna thing? not a total dick up because it worked, but it made the movie more like resident evil when its something totaly diffrent. they really should of kept the hell aspect in there. would of let the movie be a hell of a lot darker and evil (no pun intended) 4.) the rock shouldn't of been the bad guy. rock + bad skin condition = unselling to me. having a baron of hell would of been a lot better IMO. that or the cyberdaemon. as reload said though, there is tons of inuendo scattered through the movie that you will notice. Dr Carmack, "handles" when the marines pick up their guns, little one liners like It's Game Time, monsters looking very much like doom 3 ones did. (pinky was deffinatly a nice touch) the FPS part of the game was very nicely done however my only complain on this is that they should of used it more in the movie. even only a few seconds here and there, it made the movie so much more doomish. i liked it, dont regret paying to see it as i went in with an open mind. if they do a sequal, they should follow the doom 2 part with earth being invaded and bring in the big guns, spidermind, cyberdaemon and the ever needed red meatball daemon (cant spell its name so i'm not gonna try) |

The movie was good for an average action mindless zombie killing thing.
It sucked as a Doom movie though. Someone forgot the explosive barrels, the medikits and the Cyberdemon, no rocket launcher and no plasma gun.
If they had of left everything about hell out of the movie I would let it pass. However they had a couple of referances just to remind me that the producers didnt have the balls to go the full yard when it came to Hell. I spose they feared that there are just too many evangalical religious freeks and the movie would make no money. A shame. |

Why would religious freaks mind the hell references? After all, you have to be religious to believe in hell... and they are killing hell demons - whats un-Christian about that? Though I think you're probably right, the new-age morons would probably find some issue with it... last edited by AnaRoT at 11:27:11 29/Oct/05 |

I was hoping the rock would become the Cyberdemon, that would have been awesome. But then my brother had a point, with this new explanation they made about it being a virus that mutates people, it'd be kinda hard to do a Cyberdemon and not have it just be incredibly lame.
I loved when the Rock gets pulled through the nano wall by the zombies though, "No! I'm not supposed to die!" That made me laugh. |

Same goes with the lack of imp fireball. --- POSSIBLE SPOILER BELOW --- According to the imdb Trivia page: The Rock was offered the lead role of John Grimm, but chose the role of Sarge because he thought it was more interesting. If this is true, I still found that The Rock would have made the best Sarge, as he would have seemed a little strange having family issues. Plus, due to his build and look, he's already half-way to looking like an imp or hellknight, chromosome pair 24 or not :P |

I'd say it would have something to do with the amount of Christians in the US. They somehow seem to have some influence over movies. I remember when Titanic was released on video and a Christian group had a version made that didn't contain the scene with Jack drawing Rose naked, even though you didn't see anything anyway. 8-/ |

Just saw it - not bad at all! Really enjoyed the first person part, I thought it was excellently done. I too noticed that most if not all the names of the Dr's were members of the iD software team, along with a heap of other game references. Did anyone else notice the blatant similarities to Predator? A team going in, with a member called Mack, a black guy firing a minigun who like almost exactly like Bill Duke, the scene at the start with them in the helicopter and it going red inside as they landed, the Rock saying "If it breaths, kill it" which sounds very much like "If it bleeds, we can kill it" - he even says it almost identically to Arnold! There are more similarities too, I cbf thinking of them all. I came out charged and wanting to kill things = cool movie! |

Jesse Ventura had the minigun until he died then Bill Duke picked it up and cut sick into the forest. Yeah I was actually re-aquainted with that fact by my fiance... yes, she's f***ing awesome. For trivia, they did that scene of cutting the forest down with minigun 3 times - had to reset the whole lot each time! speaking of predator, theres a rumour going around that 20th century fox is going to remake it. That would be soooo gay... who would play Arnold's role? Or any of the characters for that matter - they all had such personality, which is generally completely lacking in modern cinema. I came out charged and wanting to kill things Ok, so it doesn't take much to get me to that level.... Speaking of which, one of the things that Doom lacked most was the presence of Christian Bale... :P |

I have to admit, this is the very first that I'm hearing on it, but according to the "Wrestling Observer Newsletter", WWE Superstar John Cena, coming up next in "The Marine" opposite "Nip/Tuck" star Kelly Carlson, is apparently up for the lead role in a remake of 1987's Arnold Schwazenegger starrer, "Predator". http://www.moviehole.net/news/whats_this_theyre_remaking_pre.html |

remaking predator is like... just sacreligious (spelling?) its 1 of the best action movies even today and they wanna remake it? they will only ruin a classic. now if they wanna make a predator 3, sure go for it. however i read somewhere that cena has indeed been given the roll, but the director was given a choice wether or not he wanted to do a remake or a new installment but they havn't 100% made up their minds.

Just got back from seeing this and my overall impression was that it was an extremely boring movie. Sure there was some nice violence in it but over half the movie was them sneaking thru corridors trying to shoot a couple of creatures and always missing.
I hate watching stuff where the camera only gives you little glimpses of the creatures and when someone was being attacked the camera angles were all over the place and you never got a good look at what was going on. About halfway thru the movie I wanted to get up and leave I was that bored. Anyway... Good Points: - the chicky babe was a little honey bunny - lots of blood - great sound effects Bad Points: - very tedious - not enough demons - a dumb fight scene at the end |

Doom by name only. It had the merits of a decent action movie and the gore was top notch, but it seriously just felt like they'd taken a generic sci-fi screenplay about genetic mutations in space and changed the names of weapons/corporation/monsters to match familiars from Doom instead seemingly having more in common with Resident Evil.
Things that a real Doom movie needs that this was void of: I could probably go on, but just the Hell concept alone would require a totally different script. Oh well. In regards to a possible Predator remake, as much as I enjoy some remakes Predator just doesnt need one. IMO, Predator is one of the few 80s movies you can watch, that doesnt seem like an 80s era movie. It's just aged so well and has everything a good action movie needs. Remaking presents too many possibilities of f***ing it up and putting another bad mark on the Predator franchise. A new addition to the series by a competant director however would be fine by me. Epecially if Dutch is back. |

Dan I totally agree on many of the points that you have so kindly listed. However I believe that if we are to become one with each other then we must learn to aprenciate the finer arts such as mozart and so on and so forth. Although I must tell you of a rather funny situation I was in only the other night, you see I had some chaps over to smoke some cigars and talk about the latest buisness weekly magazine and while we were doing so I had the strangest feeling that I was losing something, it was my sexuality. I guess the point of this post is to let you know that being a fag is ok and you won't be persecuted for your bedroom antics.
Now I must tell you of this darling merlot we had, my god man the flavours that swirled in my mouth made me feel like a king amongst men. It had obviously aged well but I felt it need something extra, but alas I am no wine maker hahaha. Another thing I'd like to discuss is the tapestry, I always find that tapestry from the 1940's go well in my study (german of course) however recently I made a rather BOLD move to english tapestry and when all is said and done, I must say I prefer the english for some reason, perhaps the lack of swastikas and SS lightning bolts has something to do with it. Now while I was admiring my lovely tapestry which I had placed around my castle I was listening to Les Miserables (in french, yes I speak 8 languages) and I must say that everytime I hear that masterpiece it brings a tear to my eye, luckily I have a maid which clears the salty tears off my antique wooden floorboards, which stain quite easily. Where was I? Oh yes lis mis, I guess what I find most beautiful about the story is that a simple man, bound to chains can rise and change his stars, hell, become a new man! IS THAT NOT WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT?!?! So I ask you Dan, think about this, and think hard...how many sucks would a f*** suck if a suck could f*** a suck? |

Saw it, thought it was good.
BFG handled only okay? It's originally shown as the Bio-Force Gun, which was what it was named in Doom3 I believe. However the rock calls it the Big f***ing Gun. Which is what it's name was supposed to be in Doom1 and Doom2 (Or Big Freakin' Gun as it was called in all the doom books).. Actually, in fact, the Doom movie seemed very much like the Doom1 book --> movie conversion. In the doom books there is a chick (PFC Arlene Sanders), 'the doom guy' is named Flynn Taggart 'Fly'. Making a sequal to the movie would be easy - couple of the UAC guys who evac'd escaped the earth ARK center. From there, you could come up with heaps of reasons to add in Cacodemons, Spiderminds and so on (they could even go and give Karl more 'doomguyish' armour now that he knows what he's dealing with etc. etc.). Thought it was a pretty cool movie for what it was overall. |

Yes but the Doom books were very true to the games. Down to the first imp encounter in E1M1 at the nukeage platform, many of the other maps, the weapons, megasphere, teleporting from Phobos->Deimos without clothes or weapons :P
Though the reason he got sent to Phobos in the first place was the best! |

Okay, I just saw it, and I must say that it exceeded expectations. It was a good movie. If the first half was anywhere near as good as the second half, I'd have said it was a f***ing awesome movie, but it wasn't.... First half needed a lot more zombies being splattered.
Also, the FPS scene was pretty impressive. It was like "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" It fit in really well imo. All in all, I'd say it's worth the watch. To directly quote the girlfriend, "Almost sucked, but not quite - not enough zombie blasting." last edited by Midda at 02:53:36 31/Oct/05 |
