Sounds cool - there is a similar thing built into The Arena that lets you do stuff like that (ie, for supported games you it creates a pseudo-VPN between users so you can play as if you are on LAN). The biggest advantage there though is that all the traffic is then routed via a GameArena server - resulting in essentially free traffic for supported p2p games (like C&C Generals, for example).

yeah trog i was impressed when I saw that was part of the cogs spec. cheers to whoever wrote that bit, was it nathan?
there's been a few programs that do this for a while now. a much more configurable one is a program called GIT. been around for ages. |

so it's pretty much just vpn but uses one of their servers to do all the setup work instead of you having to have a vpn server & configure it? Sounds quite the noob friendly application, what happens if their servers go down though?

It's a simple vpn packaged into a messenger program, I've been using it for a bit now. Of course it won't work for steam as it's by definition a vPn (although with a bit of mucking around you can get steam going), but starting steam in offline mode and playing through that is fine.
I've started using openvpn, which is quite a bit more configurable and secure. Only reason to use hamachi now is for people with no idea on vpn's, and it's relatively simple setup. |

its useless if you're behind a firewall, unless you know the net admins and can ask them to open or forward some ports for you. but then, if they were willing to do that, you could probably con them into just opening the ports for the game you want to play. So i can't say its particularly useful for anything workwise.
