I watched a very disturbing British documentary last night called: The Real Sex Traffic.

The lowdown is that women from poor countries in Europe are being sold into the sex industry and forced to work as a prostitute for fear of their lives/ lives of their families.

More disturbing was the fact that the crims make so much money that they can pay off the police / justice system. Smuggling these women to different countries is growing faster then the smuggling of illegal drugs, because it's safer for the crims and they can still make heaps of money.

The documentary ended with one 'smuggler' finally going to court, admitting his guilt, only to get a 6 month suspended sentence. He is selling PEOPLE, who are repeatedly being RAPED up to 20 times each night, and he gets a 6 months suspended sentence. I mean what the f***? The guy leaves court with a big smile and says he has a good lawyer. (Paid-off the judge no doubt.)

The women are thrown out like trash when they are no longer attractive to their clients, or are too sick with diseases such as aids. Approximately 500,000 women are illegally sold each year in Europe alone.

It's a big problem in many countries. I can't tell you how much this disgusts me, that humans will take such advantage of other humans, just to make a quick buck. Ruining peoples lives, for money. Soooo many bad people in this world.

That's just sickening. I seriously would have no problem killing these slavers. Could it really be as many as 500,000? That's half a million people! Surely it can't be that many. Any linkies?

There was a feature on 21st century slavery in a recent national geographic. It was one of the most depressing things i have ever read. Almost made me feel ashamed to be human.

The only thing i found somewhat good was that according to the studies they quoted in the article (not sure where they came from), there is no people trafficking to/from Australia (though that probably has more to do with our grographical location).

I'll have to check out that movie rev suggested.

It sounds like he has watched this documentary and it's opened his eyes to the horror of the sex slave trade in eastern europe, which is a good thing.

Well, i personally put my energy/charity $$'s into environmental activism, so i probably wont actively *do* anything about the problem. That said, if i was ever presented with a way to support a 'war on slavery' (either by voting or donating money) i would support it wholeheartedly.

I didn’t suggest that exploited sex slaves prefer their position as a prostitute to anything else they aspired to as a child. I didn’t state that he couldn’t assert his own opinions in this thread. I also, didn’t even attempt to insult him. What I did suggest is that if people are going to use statistics to make an argument, they need to state where there sources so people can gauge the validity of their claims.

Someone else pointed out the stupidity of his ‘statistic’ by inversing it “3% of exploited prostitutes love their position”. If Jordan had used a real statistic or had simply stated an opinion with no statistic attached, then nobody would have called him out.

There is a fantastic russian movie about this issue called "lilja 4 ever" (something like that).

I saw it in lithuania and it's about a young 15 year old girl who was abandoned in russia by her parents and brother who moved to America. She had to live with auntie and that was s*** for her... the only way to survive was to prostitute herself... She then met a young boy who charmed her and made her fall in love with him. he then promised her work in switzerland and organised passport for her n s***. Once she got there, she was picked up by a pimp and locked her up in an apartment and fed her macca's everyday after she finished prostituting. She managed to get out but was too scared to go to cops as she would be killed back in russia... So she committed suicide and went to heaven...

Very tragic movie, but definitely shocking and showed what happens over there. Makes you just wanna cry for all the poor woman over there.
