So, I was enrolled in MGTS1201, this newbie information systems-type subject at UQ. I enrolled via SiNet, which let me do it fine. I checked with my Faculty to ensure that there are no problems with me doing this subject (I'm B.Sc, due to finish at the end of this year), and all was clear.
But, a friend just pointed out that this subject is incompatible with a subject I did last semester. I didn't notice this at the time, thinking that if it WAS incompatible, I wouldn't have been allowed to enrol (when I tried to enrol in another subject I was planning on doing, SiNet correctly refused me because it was incompatible with another subject that I'd done). So, I email UQ and get told that, golly no, I can't do this subject. So I'm now in the fully soap-dropping position of having to find a new subject (I have to finish by the end of this year or else my credit will start expiring; I had to get an extension to finish even this late) before the end of August. So far I'm looking at ECON1010 (intro to Micro Economics) and MGTS3205 (Securing the Commercial Internet). The second looks like it will be 'easier', from the perspective that I've got a lot of background knowledge there, but the ECON one might be easier because its first year...? Anyone doing anything else at UQ, first or second year subject (being a B.Sc student I can do pretty much anything) that a) hasn't had any assessment yet and b) I could quickly pick up the first six weeks of work? |

econ1010 is pretty difficult, especially if you've missed so much work.
your best bet is probably one of the math1050/1051/1052/2000 series, or hit up something dumb like musc1700 (lots of work) or that health and nutrition subject |

ECON1010 is quite possibly the easiest subject in the business course. you will get a 7 with your eyes closed, I highly reccomend it. |

Poor trog, I've had an assessment in every subject by now. I doubt there's a single subject I've ever done that didn't have an assessment in the first 6 weeks.
But maybe check out PSYC1020 or PSYC1030, they're fairly easy, and their first assignments are around now... |

Trog,
I've done both econ1010 and securing the commercial internet one (although I did the postgrad version which is supposed to be a bit harder). If you have to choose between these two I'd definately say to go for latter. I was in your class for COMP3502 (Information Security) and if you passed that you'll do more than fine in this class. The first assignment is easy (just google or read the text if you can't answer the questions off the top of your head) and so is the second one (we had to write 1500 words on why Passport sucks). The final was also fairly simple - there were no suprise questions. Most of the questions were tough ones like "What does SMTP stand for?" "What's the difference between a firewall and a proxy?" etc. Intro to Econ is a bit trickier if you haven't done much business stuff. Plus much of it is cumulative learning which means that it builds week by week. Securing the commercial internet is much more broken up (aside from cryptography, which you woulda done in COMP3502). So, I'd suggest going for net security. |

persay I think you're confused with Macro which is still easy but considerably more difficult than Micro.
When I did them they were called EC121 and EC122, but they still have the same course name and Intro to Micro was a brainfart. Problem I can see for you is that Micro (when I did it) had a mid-semester worth about 35% very early in the course that was a very basic MCQ. If you missed that and walk into the final weighted 100% it may be a tad more difficult. |

masta_blasta, thanks for the comprehensive response - that is pretty much what I figured; I have zero grounding in ECON _at all_ so I think I'd have to do quite a bit more work just to get myself up to speed, but with the securing the commercial yadayada, at least I have the background knowledge to get me over that initial learning hump.

i think its a bit of a no brainer really, you'd probably breeze through both subjects - so just check to see what sort of assessment each one has completed so far and what's due in the coming weeks and make your decision based on that.

Economics is f***ing annoying, doing a 2nd year subject now - did it at school too. My 1c is do what you know. If you dont know anything about supply/demand perfect competition etc then dont bother because you are going to have to work your ass off to catch up 6 weeks of work!

haha econ1010, i remember that subject. easy as s***. but hey i am doing an economics degree. if you don't know much about econ though just stay clear of it. it's simple demand/supply stuff but yeah you've missed 6 weeks, catch up in any subject is going to be a bitch, i'd go with the second.

I got a four in econ 1010, and I dont think I went to any lectures... Its seriously not hard at all. There is a little theory in it if I remember correctly... but honestly, if you're studious at all, you'll do fine. Its just reading.

I almost did the same thing, I might have actually signed up to the same subject as you but it seems to be incompatible with the infs1200 and just about every subject known to man that has anything that midly relates to some insignificant part of the course.
