Is there really much difference between wireless ADSL router brands?
I'll be buying from umart. The cheapest is the SMC brand 802.11G 54mbps at $105 however the range goes all the way up to $190 Is there any real difference between the SMC at $105, and say the Netgear at $130? Same with PCI cards - should I just go for the cheapest? Or spend a bit extra and get a brand like D-Link or Netgear??? thanks. |

SMC was once crap, dont know about now. Netgear seems to have the biggest failure rate around at the moment.
Best off getting a linksys I reckon. |

I would advise against that personally. The cheap ones anyway are a bit dodgy, my sister got one which i have fixed for her about 3 times now. I think it has finnally died, it only lasted 6 months. Shes claiming it on warranty though.

You might want to check out belkin gear they use broadcom chipset, and atm they seem to be the best, anything boradcom based will be the best imho.

my friend got himself a d-link. Bit hard for him to set up, but I figure that's because he's a complete hardware noob and just plugged it in expecting it to work. I had no problems getting it to work with optus cable (yeah I know you're after dsl but still). I like the interface on my linksys router better than his d-link though. At first it took ages to actually get to the router setup page, and pages were loading really really slowly on the router, not even from the internet. Once it was set up though, everything seemed fine so I don't know if it was just a misconfiguration or what.
