some pics jim took (no car = camera bitch)
Stinky's photos
Movie (400meg)
movie mirror up now
DVD to come .. as are more photos for sure
(most of them were stills taken on a video camera and are as grainy as balls).

It rocked.

Casualties.
Stinky regraded every trail there with his underbody. And he deicded to see if his suspension looked better bent.
Fuknuckle decided to creat a performance exhaust mod on some boulders.
I felt that some of my suspension was hanging to low and need to reshaped on some rocks.
Glen's trailer had some issues with having the crap bounced out of it.
And we staked a couple of tyres.

More to follow.

eu4ia 3 hours sw of brisbane west of Giraween and Balandean, I have a rock climbing friend who knows sundown and says the cliffs aren't safe...

Heardy ... the only car with visible damage is a little muffle damage to the rocksta. Also damage to cars and tyres getting staked is the nature of the beast.

I think we forgot to take photos of night time/fire/drinking and yes there was some liquid warmth drunk ..

Thats only my 2 cameras of photos there ... Scooter had a camera and so did stinky.

Plus I am yet to convert 35mins of dv footage... but that was all cars doing silly things.

also that suby station wagon looks like the awesome fun :D

obes, yes I was just baiting ;)

The one and only time i've been 4wd'ing we blew 2 tires due to the terrain etc etc and this was with my mates uncle who has 20 years 4wd'ing experience

all part of it I guess, tho I don't see the logic in buying a 60,000 car to thrash about in bushland (yes I know that's what they are intended to do) my mates uncle has 2 4wds one for bush bashing crazy stuff (85 land cruiser) and the newer one just goes on sedate 4wd trips.

On the way home just before Willowbank I blew a wheel bearing ... after working out it was the wheel bearing and not something that would cause death @ 100k/h on the freeway we headed off again and the handbrake hadn't come off on that wheel and a couple of k's down the road there was a brake burning smell, pulled over and the disc was cherry red! f*** YEAH!

nah it's not mine - my cute little girly car is here: http://jason.qgl.org/gallery/albums/Ormeau_12-06-05/dsc00199.jpg

the car you're talking about is fuknukles - the green/blue you describe is pretty much how the colour looks, although the terms 'little girly cute' never occured to me any time I looked at it. maybe if I could travel back in time to when I was THIRTEEN I might giggle and call it girly ;)

it's a suprisingly tough and capable vehicle, and isn't really little at all - it's the average size short wheel base vehicle

white Patrol was Glenn's.
white super manly penis enhancing stud wagon suzi was mine.
blue/green rocksta that pete proved bounces off boulders is fuknuckle's
The green jeep cherokee with the driver and the bitch was scooters
The white suby that was held together by gaffer tape and loose nuts (including the one behind the wheel) was stinky's.

Jims (not photographed) was the black prado sitting with its diff spread between here and townsville.

The green jeep cherokee

Not quite sure what you were smoking all weekend, but my car is Blue... ;)
Also, Luke's the bitch.

Didn't have net access at home last night so I'll assume that Telstra is still gay and it didn't go up all weekend.
Will upload the stuff as soon as I abuse Telstra some more. Luke took a lot of pictures/vids so I'm going to have to sort through half the s*** first.

Was a Good Weekend all in all. My first time doing anything semi-serious in my Car. Going to have to get a Rear Locker, lift Kit and Bigger Tyres now though...

I don't know if the pictures really show it, but My car is a magnet to the dirt/dust and I have already had a few strange looks from people driving past.
It's like these people don't know what offroad is.

That was Glenn's and yeah it was...

Out of the 5 Vehicles I think mine (Cherokee) probably was the most panzie...
Plans to upgrade now though... soon as I get some more cash in my account.
After I get some work done on mine it should go very well on all the stuff we went on. Don't think I'll be doing any Double Black Diamond traks at a 4x4 Park anytime soon though...

My Dad has the new version Cherokee's which have LSD and some other extra's in, but they look like a fairly 'Soccer Mum' style 4wd so he wants to go and test it out to see how well it goes.

Poor ditch didn't get breastfed as a youngster.

Paul and glenn would be able to express the difficulty of the sections in terms of landcruise park difficulties if you are really interested ditch.

ps. it was 4wding, a country pack falcon wouldn't have even gotten to the camp site.

Obes if your four wheel drive can get there, I will definitely need to go get another lift on mine. My penis is feeling incredibly small right now and the only thing I can do to compensate is go and get my car lifted another inch. You'd be suprised how complicated it is to go and hand over money in exchange for getting your 4wd lifted - no-one else but me is capable of doing it, so it sets me apart from the rest of you. In hindsight though, it would've been a lot easier if I'd just been born with something that doesn't get mistaken for just another pube

Its funny you feel so threatened by my car.
Ditch

Threatend? Nah it's far more deep-seated than that. Basically, I used to like chicks but there's only so many times you can take it when they undo your fly and die of laughter cos they can't actually locate your dick. So I turned to men after reading about homosexuality being more accepted in the past few years and seeing a strap-on penis in a gay magazine. Unfortunately though, even gay men laugh at the size of my 'manhood' so all I have left is to try and compensate with the height of my 4wd and how deep a mud pit it can drive through with a toolbox and spare wheel strapped on the tray to help me feel like I'm fully hardcore. So when I see your little 4wd in the bush I get a little narky. But definitely not threatened.

If I put a number on it painted it an ugly colour and drove it round in a mud pit for a bit would that make it a "real" 4wd ?

I actually think Hunter's country pack Ford would have made it ... probably not up the big hills, but definately to the campsite. Next time we go we'll have to make sure Hunter comes along, he's often left out of stuff and I don't think it's very fair, sure he had a rocky beginning but he's not a bad guy.

We were talking late September and probably Land Cruise Park ... lots to do up there for all levels aparently. The more the merrier even if you just want to come and sink piss and shoot the breeze aroudn a fire.

Just have to avoid the homosexual small penis patrol tray back owners that have massive viagra inducing lifts .. they get angry when little cars have fun.

it was his vehicle yeah, but I don't recall who was driving it at the time. the tyre blew from a small stick supported by something solid, pointing in the right (or wrong depending how you look at it) direction and piercing the sidewall which is pretty common, even for tougher tyres sometimes.

Good thinking Obes, winch can be pretty versatile. One day it will save your ass severely.

I live on a large property myself and often winch myself through a few spots similar to where you guys were trying to get through bo and luke style.
I reckon a few spots you guys needed abit more teamwork and less spectating. If you have a few blokes with shovels and a matic or bar, those spots you were getting stuck on would have been alot easier and less hard on the gear.
If everybody hooks in you can cover alot more distance in a day as well.
I luv thrashing my gear as well but in reality if you belt up your gear too much the fun dissipates as the repair bills increase. I have been up top end/cape/NT and I have seen some imaginative stuff with tow-ropes and the like. So next time get the c***s digging! lol

Obes

The one spot I got stuck was a washed out track that has a way around. Last time I was there, I didn't see a single vehicle attempt it (including the trayback patrol with step ladder lift and spotties on the roof). Its a rather large hunk of rock (not dirt) and its a nasty shape, and just as you clear the rock there is a decent bump (and its steeper then the videos look). With rockcrawlers and sliders I might have made it instead I had to use momentum (I stalled when I tried control) and bouncing on a rock in my car with out the under body protection is not something I make a habit of.

Part of the challenge was to try and get up there without reshaping, but if we had needed to get up it, we would have made it so we could all get up. We weren't Gary gearsticks and if someone didn't feel comfortable doing something we worked out options for them to get around it.

None of us did any real damage, Pauls car is heavily protected, and mine everything important is out of harms way, all I damaged was a bit of plastic and a big protector/guard for my radial arm mounting.

lol @ Gary gearsticks.

For severe fun if any of you have an AB licence (firearms) you should try out some rec shooting as well. Excellent early AM and nighttime activities. All you need is permission from someone on a big property. It ups the fun factor immensely. Easy to get an AB licence.

If you are a greenie (aw the cute widdle kangawoo) its fun just setting up some targets etc and having target comps even. Plus they go bang liek teh CS lolz.

You have to be a little more selective who you take along then though ;)

4WD + GUNS + MATES = FUN

We'd already arrived at the destination and set up camp, the footage in the video is when we went for a couple of drives for the sake of going for a drive and having some fun as well as to pick up a bit of firewood on the way. You don't want people helping you most of the time - other than the odd suggestion about where to put the wheels to save you having to back up too far just to be able to see the ground under the car - the fun is trying to get your car over the terrain by yourself most of the time, and the fun for the other people is watching you - especially with an amusing mix of cars like that =]

If everyone had had lifted cars with lockers and big tyres it would've been a snooze-fest because nothing entertaining happens, everyone just crawls up hills barely spinning a wheel, unless you only go to places with fooly sik mate hill climbs

and doing it in style - the graceful lines of the bullbar elegantly flowing into the streamlined bodywork as though they were one, and not at all merely fastened by mismatched bolts and insulated electrical wire - the velvety flow of the aerodynamic undercarriage protection plates literally gliding over the rugged surfaces as a ballet dancer would over a highly polished floor...

Hey all. I'm still alive... kinda.
Net is still out at home, was a dead cable... and now it's C-Map issues or something...
Don't know when it will be fixed but telstra better not be charging us for this month.

It was me Driving when I staked the tyre nF, Sif let Luke drive my car. He could have brought his own if he wanted to drive.

Anything been said about the next trip yet?
I found out my flight dates, I fly out Sun the 18th and get back Sun the 25th.
So that wastes 2 weekends for me...

maybe we could make it the first weekend in october, or if that's too far, the 10th/11th of september. trouble with early september though is that I prolly won't have my new vehicle up to scratch by then

i gotta get my spare tyres up to scratch :S
since i cant repair the one that got staked and the one im using atm doesnt suit the rest of the tyres on the car, ima have to buy a new tyre which means more than one to even it out.
so ima just buy 2, put those on the back,
the ones currently on the back on the front,
the 2 currently on the front will be my new spares. 2 spares :)
tho i still need to buy another wheel for the left over tyre.

Great video dedication for me, thanks boys. Sound track seems to fit you guys perfectly...

I especially love the part where you try to put your arm out the window a number of times to look "tuff" but you then realise you can't steer with only one hand, f***ing classic.

Hey Jim,

So have you got modding plans for the Patrol yet ? Lift ? Lockers ?
mmmmmm...lockers...

I would suggest a 2" suspension lift , cause standard they do tend to drag there belly a bit.

Front and rear bars....i cant stress these two enough.... Patrols have big fat asses that get in the way of everything :)

Jim
Posts: 3537

yeah heaps of plans =]

I got a couple of quotes yesterday for 3-6" lifts and some associated bits and pieces to bring things back into line (panhards, caster bushes). Some steel rims and probably some 35" bfg muddies, although I haven't looked into other brands yet. I was pretty happy with the bfg at's I've had on the prado, they've stood up to punishment pretty well, but definitely not getting at's for this car.

Nissan are fitting a steel bar to the front, I'm pretty sure they're an arb bar. I'll get a single air locker for starters and see how it goes, can always add another later. A little bit later a replacement rear bar, 6th rim + tyre, second battery, electric winch and a storage system again if I can sell the prado one.

Pretty keen to get a rooftop tent cos I'm lazy and wouldn't mind checking out bigger fuel tanks. The list goes on =] Just a lift, tyres and locker for now though prolly.

6" lift ?!?!?! woohhaa.... Remeber anything bigger than 1/3 of the distance between the dumpstops makes it illegal...(Basicly 50mm Suspension)....Anything bigger than that needs engineering....which would kill your warranty.

If you want bigger and legal you can have 50mm suspension and then 50mm body lift...that will fit 35's....(Which are also illegal...stupid QLD)

Just remember that COG is the big killer of high lifted Patrols / Cruisers etc....I reakon go for as low as possible while providing enough lift to ramp over stuff.

I run 33's....and they are only legal on a technicality. I also went for a 3" lift in mine...but thats mostly because i knew i would be putting a lot more weight in it (Winch bar, winch, dual batteries etc etc) and that it would sag down to 2"....

If your going for one locker at the moment...put it in the front. The LSD in the back of the Patrols is pretty good. And dont worry about breaking CV's etc....its a GU Patrol...they are pretty bullet proof.

You prolly knew all this stuff already.....But just incase, i thought i would write some stuff down :)

Jim

Nah I'd only heard some of it, but I don't mind hearing it again =]

One of the guys at extreme4x4 where I had my prado diff fixed last week was telling me he just tightened up his patrol LSD clutches a little and put a locker on the front only and it works really well. I figure I'll take the car out a few times and get a feel for how it behaves before I decide too much though.

qld 4wd spares and repairs reckon 3" is legal, and they said they fitted a current GU last week with a set of dobinson's that actually resulted in the car being 110mm higher. They reckon it settled 5mm over the weekend after a bit of bashing around in the bush and will probably drop another 5mm and settle on about 100mm higher than before. He also said that 'a 3" lift is a 3" lift' implying that by fitting a legal set of springs, the fact that it resulted in the car sitting 4" higher didn't matter. I dunno how much truth there is to that, but it sounded good ;)

I guess this stuff is documented somewhere, but I blame obes for not providing me with links on a silver platter

The DOT measure the distance between your bumpstops to figure out your final lift.....So if you had 2" branded springs and it magicly lifted the car 12"....they would put your car off the road for having a 12" lift :(

3" isnt legal....but the DOT isnt really going to hassle you too much about 25mm....it will just muck with your warranty if something bad happens....3" will sag to 2 1/2" anyway after 12 months.

if you go over 2"...get castor bushes....dont let anyone talk you out of it.

I have heard that Dobinsons springs are the goods...But have personally seen the TJM XGS stuff and EFS springs working pretty well....Although the EFS stuff just doesnt seem to have 'quite' the right spring rate.....

Shocks....I had EFS shocks all round for a while...but the rears started leaking...so im not very fussed with them....Im now running Rancho's in the rear and they are holding up very well..

For a new truck i would suggest spending the money and getting the big bore Tough dog 9 stage adjustable shocks...you wont be disapointed. You can even get a in cab adjuster for that extra bling :)

For tyres that are good offroad and onroad get the Goodyear MTR wranglers. The BFG's are ok....but are really just a AT tyre and dont have sidewall grip, the Wranglers bag really well with the pressure let down too... Again i would just buy two sets of tyres, i reakon it works out cheaper in the end...have the bling rims with roadies for 99% of the time...and then put the tough stuff on with steelies for the weekends :) A decent Trolley jack and a impact wrench make short work of changing tyres.

Make sure that the front bar is a winch bar. Otherwise if you ever decide to get a winch (And seeing the plans for the car, you will) you will need to fork out another $1200 for a winch bar.

I nice rear bar is a Kaymar...They arent cheap but look factory and protect the rear quarter panels nicley.

Thats about all i can vomit at the moment :)

Hope it helps.

I've read the same recommendation regarding the tough dogs elsewhere, and the dude above who quoted the dobinson's also recommended the mtr's. I checked out the tread pattern and wondered if they might suffer the same chipping that my bfg at's did due to the little snipes in the lugs, they seem to weaken the lugs a little. Every time I look at a set of used bfg muds on someone's vehicle their solid lugs don't seem to suffer the same problem. The wrangler tg's look similar in that regard too, solid lugs without the snipes cut into them. Are you running the mtr's yourself?

yep the front bar has a winch mount point, pic here:

http://www.nissan.com.au/patrol/images/a_accessories_02.jpg

I priced a kaymar rear bar for the prado before it started breaking, I think it was about 2700 fitted, but so worth it.

thanks for the info

Wranglers do suffer from chipping etc...but that just means they are doing the job :)

Youve seen the "Mongrels" on my Rig, and they get chewed up something shocking...i think if you do the harder stuff and the tyres dont get chewed up a bit, the compound is to hard and arent supplying enough grip. I think you will be reasonably hard up finding a Mud Terrain that doesnt get chewed up pretty quick.

I havent run MTR's myself, but have driven Patrols with MTR's and have found them pretty tough, and plently of grip...About the only bad things i could say about the MTR's would be that they stake easier, and dont clear mud as good as my Mongrels, but then again they are MUCH MUCH better onroad.

You should be able to pickup a Kaymar bar for less than $2g's fitted. If you price it up lemme know how much they wanna charge for fitting...cause its only a couple hour job.

In regards to the long range fuel tanks...ive heard and seen 'very' good stuff about the LongRanger stuff. Ive seen a fully loaded GQ Patrol come down hard on a sharp tree stump with a Longrange tank.....it just blunted the stump..didnt even leave a permanent mark on the underside of the tank.

Id be up for a Ormeau run or something on the 10th / 11th etc ? If i went this Sunday id have to drag my Dad along :)

$1900for 6 wheels and tyres.
15x7 white x6 ($65 each)
9R15 STT x6 ($251 each)
they'll also do 6 months interest free from GE.

what do you guys think?

I don't really have any idea of tyres either, all I look for is a tread pattern that looks pretty grippy on dirt/mud and some information about how the tread and sidewall are constructed for resistence to being staked/torn

I had cooper st's (not stt's) on my xtrail and loved them, and was going to get the stt's on my prado except they didn't have the size available at the time. I've only read good reports on them so far.

sirgollum might know of people who've run them

I havent heard much about the New STT's actullay....they look 'very' similar to the MTR's :) So I would expect that would be too bad...

althought you should be able to get generic "sunraiser" type rims (Like the ROH Trac) for $55 / rim. Maybe less if you are spending $1900 with them.

You 'might' be paying a premium for those tyres too...being as they are pretty new on the market.... Id be checking out MTR's, Radial Claws, Maxxis?? and if you are on a budget. The Motorway tyres.

Hope that helps :)
